ROMY

Oh Julia, my love, my life, my most cherished treasure, what can I render to persuade you that my devotion is not counterfeit?

JULIA

Render what you will, dumb ass, I’m not dealing with it anymore.

ROMY

Is there nothing I can do, nothing I can say, to manifest to you that you alone are the pinnacle of my existence.

Duet:  ENOUGH/ LANGUAGE OF LOVE               JULIA and ROMY

JULIA

Okay, Romy, Listen to me.

If you think You can subdue me

Then you’ll have to make Some changes

To the quirky way you talk.

Though at first It seemed romantic

Now we’ve taken it For granted

And it makes you look Quite goofy

With that swishy way you walk.

I’ve had enough Of your stupid poet stuff.

The other girls are making

Lots of jokes at my expense.

I’ve had enough
And it’s time that I got tough

And cut you off completely

Til you get some common sense.

ROMY

Please, my love – I’ll do anything!

JULIA

Though you’ve always Been a cutie

I don’t want a Tutti-fruiti.

I prefer the strong and silent

With a little less pizzazz.

Ev’ry girl Deserves a fella

Not a swishy Cinderella

And I want a guy Who won’t let

Shirley Temple kick his ass.

I’ve had enough Of your stupid poet stuff.

The other girls are making

Lots of jokes at my expense.

I’ve had enough
And it’s time that I got tough

So unless you drop that dopey verse

And shift your sissy in reverse

And stop that fruity way you talk

And find a manly way to walk

And cut the dancing on your toes

And modify that stupid prose

Our love will be past –tense.

ROMY

What?

            JULIA

You heard me.

ROMY

You wish that I should replace my manner of speech?  With what, iambic pentameter?

JULIA

How about….. haiku?

ROMY

            (aghast)

Haiku?

JULIA

That’s right lover boy, if you speak haiku to me, I might not say adieu to you.

ROMY

Alas.

JULIA

Alas - what?

ROMY

Um…..

Alas, my heart leaps.

My lover’s lips do speak hope.

Darkness doth retreat.

JULIA

Not too bad– keep it up.

            ROMY

My heart rejoices.

My soul fills up with sunshine.

I kneel at her feet.

JULIA

Don’t stop now.

            ROMY

Behold such beauty

Behold such gracious kindness.

Behold, my true love.

JULIA

And stop skipping.

ROMY

I witness heaven.

Her voice stirs deep in my heart.

Like angels up above.

JULIA

Nope, too many syllables on that last line.

JULIA and ROMY exit with ROMY counting on his fingers.

*********************

Enter JULIA & ROMY.

JULIA

Well?

REPRISE:   Enough/ Language of Love                   ROMY and JULIA

           ROMY

My Julia’s whispers delight me.

They remind me of Aphrodite.

They play in my heart

And when we’re apart

Deep down in my pants they excite me.

           JULIA

Okay, Romy, This is boring.

Keep it up And I’ll start snoring.

There has got to be A better way

To prove your love is true.

You’ve done sonnets, You’ve done ballads.

But you still sound So fruit salad

Your acrostics sound so sappy

And you’re not good at haiku.

I’ve had enough Of your stupid poet stuff.

I refuse to love a pansy.

I need more than just a goon.

I’ve had enough,
Now just show me you are tough.

Go tell your dad that we’re in love

And will be married soon.

ROMY

Tell my father?

            JULIA

Yep.

ROMY

That we are getting married – with or without his blessing?

JULIA

Yep.

            ROMY

Truly?

JULIA

You betcha.     (pause)    What?  Is that too much?

ROMY

            (pause)

No, my Love.  This shall I do.

JULIA

Really?

            ROMY

I will show Undying passion

In a more-Than manly fashion

I will show how much I love you

Without poetry or dance.

I will turn the World on end

To show I’m Not your sissy friend.

I am a man who loves his woman

Not a sniveling little nance.

I’ve had enough Of our crazy fathers’ stuff.

JULIA

They have no right to stop us.

Matrimony is our right.

BOTH

We’ve had enough

Now, we’ll show them that it’s tough.

JULIA

            They can’t forget our happiness

ROMY

We shall insist they acquiesce.

            JULIA

We’ll make them drop this silly feud

ROMY

And extricate this Gangster mood.

JULIA

Unless they wise up and consent

                        ROMY

We’ll show them we can circumvent.

             BOTH

We shall elope tonight.
