by Kim Douglass and D. Richard Tucker

SONG: MAFIASCO       Company (except Shark)

MAMA
Come on and take a second look
Inside those dusty history books
You’ll find a thing or two you didn’t know before.
Leave all your modern worries here.
And travel back to yester year
And then you’ll see
what made the Roaring Twenties roar.

                                    GINA
You may have heard of Errol Flynn,
Of flapper girls and bathtub gin.

                                    JULIA
You know of Jolson, Chaplin, Lindy and Mae West.

                                    MEN
You know Babe Ruth and Al Capone
And now we’ll touch your funny bone

ALL
And show a little part of history that you missed.
Mafiasco, Mafiasco

MAMA
This is our tribute to disorganized crime.

ALL
Mafiasco, Mafiasco

ROMY, JOEY, and DONs
When gangland wars were fought like pillow fights,

WOMEN, LOUIE, and VITO
And a mugging didn’t violate your civil rights,

MAMA
And the dirty work was always done by supper time.

ALL
Mafiasco

WOMEN
We often think of early days
As filled with ruthless mobster ways
Protection schemes and guns and
violent gangland war.

MEN
Of racketeers and bootlegged booze,
Extortion, bribes, and concrete shoes

                                    ALL
But that is not what made
the Roaring Twenties roar.

LOUIE
A thug can be your kind of guy

VITO
A hoodlum might be your ally

MAMA
Or you may find a hit man can be debonair.

GINA
A mustache may just hide a dame

JOEY
A couple crime lords might be tame

                                    ROMY and JULIA
Their son and daughter just might make
a lovely pair.

ALL
Mafiasco, Mafiasco
This is our tribute to disorganized crime.
Mafiasco, Mafiasco
When gangland wars were fought like pillow fights,
And a mugging didn’t violate your civil rights,
And the dirty work was always done by supper time.
Mafiasco

MAMA exits.

MEN
We hope it’s not confusing
But our gangsters are amusing

ALL
And our criminals are absolutely dandy.

MAMA enters with a Tommygun and
points it at the others who hold their
hands up in the air.

MAMA
St. Valentine’s is not about a massacre

JOEY
Because we’d much prefer

JOEY sticks his finger into the muzzle
of the gun and pulls out a bouquet
of flowers from the gun barrel.

ALL
Flowers and candy.

JOEY gives the flowers to GINA who
kisses him on the cheek.  GINA places
the flowers in a vase on the table as
JOEY continues to sing.

JOEY
With silent movies on the screen
That Valentino made a scene.

JULIA
And Shirley Temple was the girl we could adore.

MEN
New ladies’ fashions gave them flair.

WOMEN
Take off your corsetS - cut your hair.

ALL
We’ll show you just what made
the Roaring Twenties roar.
Mafiasco, Mafiasco
This is our tribute to disorganized crime.
Mafiasco, Mafiasco
When gangland wars were fought like pillow fights,
And a mugging didn’t violate your civil rights,
And the dirty work was always done by supper time.
Mafiasco,   Mafiasco!
